Marriage record signed by her father (Abraham), uncle (Isaac), and grandfather, Ralph Cowgill. Sarah’s granddaughter, Hannah Smith, dau of Aaron Smith, married her (Sarah’s) nephew Thomas Cowgill (see Page 330). On 1 Jun 1775, Thomas Smith “of Plumstead Twp, Bucks Co., PA” is recorded (Loudoun Co. Deed Book K, p 98/99) as executing a land purchase of 125 acres in Loudoun Co. Thomas was not a signatory, but his probable brother-in-law, Abraham Cowgill (see Page 329 below), was, possibly acting as his agent. No indication Thomas ever lived there. Sarah and two daughters were received at Goose Creek MM in VA in 1791 on a certificate from Buckingham MM in PA. No further record.

3 Ralph Cowgill b 31 Dec 1729, PA, d 1795, Loudoun Co., VA, m Sarah Pellar, dau of Isaac Pellar of PA. She was living at the time of Ralph's death. Ralph was listed on the Tax Rolls of Bucks Co., PA, in 1761 (Solebury Twp); in 1763, 1764 (Plumstead Twp); and in 1779 to 1784 (Solebury Twp). Under returns and assessments, Bucks Co., PA, Ralph Cowgill in 1781 had "no acres", a horse and a cow; in 1782 had 2 horses, 2 cattle, and 7 white inhabitants. Ralph moved to VA by 1784 when he is listed on the Loudoun Co. Tithables Lists of 1784 for Shelburne Parish with sons Isaac and James. Ralph is listed as head of household on Loudoun Co. tithables and personal property tax lists through 1794. An Abraham Cowgill and an Isaac "Coghill" are listed in Loudoun Co. in 1782, under VA Taxpayers. Both are listed as head of household. These are Ralph's brothers.

Ralph left a Will dated 9 Nov 1794, proved 9 Feb 1795. The inventory of his estate, recorded 14 Sep 1795, listed the following: (sic) “To his riding horse saddle & bridle, his wearing apparel, To cash £1;To a bond £12…0…0; To a note £3…0…0; a bay mare, sorrel horse, black horse, black horse, bay colt, black cow, brindle cow, red cow, pide cow, pide cow, red cow, brindle heifer, a bull, pide heifer, 25 sheep; 11 swine, a winnowing fan, Rye in the Barrack, Flax in the Barrack, a waggon and geers; harrow, plow and irons, shovel, 200 bushels Wheat; 8 bushels Buckwheat, jack screw, waggon cloth, farming utensils, set of Smiths tools, stock of Bees, 600 wt. Note: A book entitled The History of the People Called Quakers, covering the period 1648 to 1717, owned by Loretta Moss of OH, contains handwritten data on various Cowgill families. The children, with dates of birth, of Ralph and Sarah Cowgill were listed on p660 as follows:

Isaac and Sarah had some turbulent times which are recorded in the Encyclopedias of American Quaker Genealogy, by William Wade Hinshaw. They were disowned for mou, although Sarah later made amends and returned to membership. Sarah arrived at Westland MM (Washington Co., PA) from Goose Creek MM, 25 May 1799, and died a few years later. After his 2nd marriage, Isaac, who had been reinstated in the Concord MM in 1802 along with son Abraham, was again dismissed for mou.

In 1794, Isaac is listed in “Class 9” on the roster of a company in the 2nd Bn of the 56th Regiment of the Loudoun Co. militia. He is listed as a landowner on Loudoun Co. land tax rolls through 1800, but drops off personal property tax lists after 1796. It appears that Isaac and his brother Ralph did not leave VA until after the death in 1795 of their father, Ralph. Isaac lived in Wheeling, VA (now WV), 1797 to 1799, then moved to Belmont Co., OH. Isaac was often referred to as “Isaac Jr” in Loudoun Co. records to distinguish him from his uncle. He apparently owned acreage in Guernsey Co., part of which he sold to a Edward Wilson in 1819, and others to son Joseph in 1824. According to an article on the family in History of Belmont and Guernsey Counties, all of Isaac’s children died in Belmont Co. except Joseph, who moved to Guernsey Co. in 1807 and died there.

An excerpt from the Davis Commercial Encyclopedia of the Pacific Coast and Southwest, by Ellis A. Davis, ed. 1911, p308 follows:

"LEWIS I. COWGILL, President Merchants National Bank, Chronical Building, San Francisco.

Lewis I. Cowgill was born of that staunch old Quaker stock of Iowa, in the year 1860. His father was president of a bank in that State and at the same time a prominent farmer, having large holdings of land.

Mr. Cowgill received his early education in the Hawkeye State but went to Barnesville, Ohio, and attended the Barnesville College, a well-known Quaker institution. Having acquired his college education he returned to Iowa and became cashier of a bank, where he remained for a number of years. He then came to the Coast and very soon became affiliated with the Sather Banking Co. He soon had a movement on foot for the nationalization of this institution, which resulted in the formation of the San Francisco National Bank. Of that institution he was cashier for twelve years. He then organized the Scandinavian American Savings Bank which he caused to be nationalized in the year 1907, under the name of the Merchants National Bank of San Francisco which has since become one of the prominent Market Street banking houses. The bank is a member of the San Francisco Clearing House."

Joseph was living when his father's will was made, dated 9 Nov 1794, receiving joint (with brother Ralph) interest in the family farm “provided they both continue to work on the farm as far as health permit”. He is listed on the Loudoun Co. tax list for 1789, with his tax paid by his father, Ralph, indicating age between 16 and 21; in 1794, he appears on the Loudoun Co. militia lists in Class 4 on the roster of Cpt Benjamin Grayson's Co, 2nd Bn, 57th Regt; he also appears in Loudoun Co. militia records in 1795 on 23 May at a court martial for the 2nd Bn, 56th Regt (Cpt Hereford's Co), "ordered that (Joseph Cowgill) be exempted from militia duty during the disability he now labors under of a strain in his ankle". This William Carter was closely associated with the Cowgill family, witnessing various documents, etc (this marriage is listed in Frederick County, Virginia, Marriages, 1771-1825, by Davis, as "Ralph COGILL and Mary Carter"). Ralph moved to Loudoun Co., VA, with his parents after the enumeration of the 1784 PA Tax List. He is listed on Loudoun Co. land tax lists from 1790 through 1806 as owner of “64 & 75 acres of Butcher”. In 1794, Ralph appears on the Loudoun Co. militia lists in Class 6 on the roster of Cpt George Rust's Co, 2nd Bn, 56th Regt. This is probably the Ralph Cowgill who served during the War of 1812 as a Pvt in 1st Regiment (DeLong's), Ohio Militia. Ralph and Mary moved to OH in 1806 with six children. A sketch of Ralph and family is in the History of Early Settlers of Belmont and Jefferson Counties, Ohio. They reared nine children, all but three deceased before 1880. 8 Eliza Cowgill (twin of Elizabeth?) b 10 Aug 1825, VA, d 20 Dec 1900, m 14 Jan (also as Feb) 1847, her first cousin (son of Tacey Cowgill), Butler Corder b 19 Nov 1819, VA, d 25 Dec 1899. Both are bur Cedar Grove Cem., Bealton, Fauquier Co., VA.

3 Hannah Cowgill (dau of Abraham and Mary Cowgill) b ca 1779?, d bef 1860?, m 24 Feb 1803, Frederick Co., VA, by Wm F. R. Davis, Jacob Mason, b 4 Apr 1779, d 1830. Hannah and Jacob lived in Fauquier Co. through 1830 (Hannah a widow there in 1830), then Hannah appears in Rappahannock Co. in 1850 with son-in-law Abraham Mason, and near David and Ury (Cowgill) Mason (see child # 1 above). A Frederick Co., VA, marriage list has Hannah as dau of Adam Cogill, who was also the bondsman, but no such person appears on county census or tax lists. “Adam” could be a mistake for Abraham, but Abraham could not have posted the bond (presumably would have been by brother John Cowgill). There was an Adam Kugle/Koogle/Cougle (varies over time) in nearby Frederick Co., MD, so Hannah may not be a Cowgill.

4 Sarah Cowgill b ca 1780, VA, d bef 1850 (?), m 22 Apr 1800, Fauquier Co., Abner Palmer, b ca 1780, d bef 1850 (?), David Mason (Sarah’s brother-in-law) bondsman. Abner and Sarah in Loudoun Co. in 1810, then in Fauquier Co. through 1840 where they probably died.

5 son Cowgill? b 1765-1784 (from 1810 census; a male in that age group with the family, but could be laborer, in-law, or otherwise). No further information.

6 Josias (also Josiah and Joseph) Cowgill b ca 1784, d ca 1858 (?; one source has inventory and appraisal of his estate 12 Jun 1858; could not locate in county records), m ? . On the 1810 Census, Fauquier Co., Josiah as “head of household” has m 1 10/16 (who?); 1 16/26 (who?); 3 26/45 (one Josiah, one John, the other?); f 1 16/26 (probably sister, Rachel); 1>45 (probably his mother). Josias appears on Fauquier Co. tax rolls through 1824 (when data ends), but is not listed on the 1820 or subsequent census.

7 Tacey Cowgill b 1788? (also as 1792), VA, d 8 Nov 1857 (her estate underwent inventory/appraisal on 14 Dec 1857), m 25 Dec 1809, Fauquier Co., VA, with consent of her father (Tacey "of lawful age"; but Abraham had died!), Josiah Cowgill bondsman, Elisha Corder (twin of Elizabeth Corder who m Tacey's brother, John Cowgill?), b 1786/1788, d before 1835, son of John and Hannah (Way) Corder. Family lore says Elisha d 7 Sep 1828 (John Corder's will of 1835 mentions his "son Elisha, deceased"), possibly from a broken neck from falling off a horse. Note: Josiah signed an oath that "Tacey Cowgill is above the age of twenty one years and has lived in the county of Fauquier for the last twelve months this 25th day of December 1809"; available information indicates he fibbed!

8 Rachel Cowgill, m 1 Feb 1816, George Leach, Abner Palmer witness. No further information.

9 son Cowgill? b 1784-1794 (from 1810 census, but could be laborer or otherwise).

10 son Cowgill? b 1794-1800 (from 1810 census, but could be laborer or otherwise).

8 Isaac Cowgill, son of Abraham and Dorothy Cowgill, b 6 Oct 1740, Bucks Co., PA, d 1823, Loudoun Co., VA, m(1) 2 Mar 1770, Bucks Co., PA, recorded "out of unity" in Buckingham MM, Rebecca ____ , b 16 Aug 1749, who apparently d after the birth of one or two children; m(2) Mary Carter, b 7 Oct 1762, d ca 1851 (appraisal/inventory of her estate in Loudoun Co. performed Mar 1851 by Seth Smith, administrator), dau of Henry and Martha Carter of VA. Isaac’s Will (Will Book O, page 312) is dated 10 Sep 1816 and was proved 10 Nov 1823, Jacob Silcott (Isaac’s son-in-law), administrator. Apparently, all his children, except Dorothy and Thomas, were living in the county when Isaac made his will. Dorothy was not included, as she had lived for many years with cousin Ralph Cowgill, Belmont Co., OH. Isaac moved from Bucks Co. to VA in 1770; he appears on Loudoun Co. tax lists for Shelburne Parish (in far northern Loudoun Co.) starting in 1770. On 2 Nov 1771 (recorded 9 Mar 1772), he and Rebecca (and “Doretta”) leased a farm on Beaver Dam branch of Goose Creek from Thomas Blackburn, next to the farm of Henry and Joseph Smith (Deed Book H:p331-333). He and Rebecca witnessed a marrige 8 Jan 1772 at South Fork (Fairfax MM records). On 10 Nov 1792, he leased 100 acres in Shelburne Parish of Loudoun Co. (nephew Isaac “Jr”, son of Ralph, a witness - DB V:53). Isaac may have been disabled somehow, as Jacob Silcott furnished an account of expenditures against his estate that begins in 1818. Names of children and dates of birth (except for Thomas) are from an old Family Bible. Other information from Courthouse records, descendants, and Isaac's Will; he did not name each child, except when making a special bequest, then states "all my children and my son Thomas."

Children: known are – Dorothy, Thomas, Martha, Rebecca, Hannah, Sarah, Tamar, Ruth, Nancy, Mary, Alise, Rachel

1 Dorothy Cowgill b 24 Aug 1775 (? probably 1771 – consider marriage date and see real estate transaction cited above; “Doretta” was given a lifetime right of lease – was she handicapped?), living in Belmont Co., OH, with Cousin Ralph Cowgill and family on 19 Jun 1839, when Ralph's will is dated, in which he stated "I will and devise that my cousin Dorothy who has long been an inmate in my family, shall still have the privilege of a home in my residence as formerly." Apparently single.

2 Thomas Cowgill b ca 1779, d 13 Nov 1843, age 65y, Plumstead Twp, Bucks Co., PA, m 7 Jul 1811, Bucks Co., his cousin (dau of Aaron Smith, son of Thomas Smith and Sarah Cowgill – see page 296), Hannah Smith, b 22 Feb 1794, PA, d 28 Nov 1875, age 81y 9m 6d, Plumstead Twp. Hannah was living with her son Samuel in 1850/60, and dau Rebecca in 1870. Thomas first appears on the 1796 Loudoun Co. personal property list as the son of Isaac, indicating he reached 16 years of age within that year. He was listed with his father through 1806 (but not in 1802), then no record until the 1820 census in Bucks Co.

Children: known are (order uncertain) – Rebecca, son, Hannah, dau, son(?), Samuel, John, Rachel

1 Rebecca Cowgill b 1814, m (?). Rebecca is shown on the 1880 Census, Bucks Co., as a “widow” with Laertis Randall, age 23, listed as “son” (shown as Laerter Randell, age 6, with Rebecca’s mother Hannah, brother Samuel, and Rebecca in 1860; she also had nephew John Cowgill, age 18, living with her (is he the son of her brother John?). In the will of Sarah Clossen (nee Smith) dated 22 Oct 1883, probated 30 Jan 1893, bequests are made to “nieces and nephews John Cowgill, …, Rebecca Cowgill (and son Laertes Randall) …”. No further information.

2 son Cowgill b 1815, d 1820 (need source for this – 1820 census has two sons b 1810-1820)

3 Hannah “Anna” Cowgill b 1816, PA. Anna Cowgill shown as a domestic in Bucks Co. in 1860. Apparently single. No further information.

4 dau Cowgill b bef 1820, m or d bef 1830.

Children: three (two by Hibbs names unknown, mentioned in Isaac's will) – but another was

1 Maria (Mariah) Cowgill b 4 May 1811, Loudoun Co., VA. William Batson was adjudged (by Loudoun Co. Court) her father, to pay $25 per year support for 3 years from 4 May 1816. The court found the “child not likely to be charged to the parish - is supported by her grandfather” (Isaac) (from Apprentices, Poor Children, and Bastards of Loudoun Co. 1757-1850). On 13 Sep 1817, Mariah, “baseborn”, age 6 as of 4 May 1817, was put in care of Isaac Cowgill, to be a housekeeper. She was singled out in Isaac’s will (“my little granddaughter”), where he charged his wife “to bring (Maria) up as also such of my own children as are in their minority …”. 9 Nancy Cowgill b 31 Aug 1795, VA, d OH. Probably the mother of Amanda Melvina Cowgill (Amanda’s mother listed as Nancy Cowgill on death cert). A Nancy Cowgill, age 49, b VA, is listed with Melvina on 1850 Census, Pike Co., OH. Nancy is the most likely sibling of Amanda’s aunt, Rachel. Nancy may be the second female, aged 30/40, listed with (sister) Rachel Palmer in Ross Co., OH, in 1840. Amanda’s death cert says father was John Cowgill, b WV.

Children: suspected are – Amanda, Rachel
