(Mge Bk 9 p139), IN, Sarah "Sadie"  Jane Steele, b 19 Aug 1859, Holmes, IN or OH (on 1905 mge cert claimed b 1864 in Millersburg, OH), d 27 Jul 1940, dau of George and Leah (Dietz) Steele. Sarah m(2) 22 Mar 1899, St Joseph Co., Andrew J. Garrett, b Dec 1865, IN; div ca 1899; m(3) 5 Dec 1905, Henry A. Base, b 9 Dec 1858. She and Lawrence shown together in 1900 (Andrew listed with his mother), and with her 3rd husband in 1910 in South Bend. Sarah's bur record indicates a 4th marriage to ___ Desonia. Sarah and two daus bur City Cem., South Bend. There is an obit on George (South Bend World, 19 May 1894, page 2).

John Cougle/Cogle, d 1782, Berkeley Co., VA (later WV), m Elizabeth _____. He is thought to have lived northeast of Martinsburg, about 15 miles northeast of John Cowgill, son of Henry (page 131, above). This John’s estate (“horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, wheat and rye in the sheaf, farm implements, household implements, 5 acres grain the field”) was appraised by Jacob Linder, John Miers, and Allan Miller, and recorded 19 Mar 1782 (Will Book 1, p243) in Berkeley Co. There was an assignment of Dower to Elizabeth, “widow of John Cogle”, of 26.5 acres 1 Aug 1782 by William Lucas, Teter (Peter?) Myers, and Peter Heckman, recorded 20 Aug 1782 (Deed Book 5, p747). Was this John related to:

John shown as Cowgill on 1830 census; descendents used Cogle. John and Catherine may have lived with her family early on as John does not appear on tax lists in the 1820s or separately on the 1820 census. Most of the family remained in an area near the Jefferson/Loudoun Co. border. Catherine was listed with son Frederick on the 1870 census. Note: this John is a possible son of Ewing Cowgill (see notes on Page 181).

Benjamin Franklin Cogle b ca 1812, Philadelphia, PA, d ca 1872?, age 56y, m(1) 7 Nov 1832, Franklin Co., KY, Martha V. Kincaid, b 9 Sep 1814, KY, d 4 Oct 1844; m(2) 2 Dec 1845 (marriage or bond date), Henry Co., KY, Amanda Brewer (or Bruer), b ca 1831, KY, d bef 1860; m(3) 10 Aug 1857, Henry Co., KY, Jennie "Jane" Suddith, b ca 1843, KY. Jane shown as div in 1880. Benjamin was born in PA, "of sterling Dutch stock". He learned the baker and confectionery trade, and when young went to KY - he was in Franklin Co., KY, by 1832 (on 1834 tax list) where he operated a "coffee house"; and in New Castle, Henry Co., KY by the 1850's, where he held a tavern license. He had 2 to 3 slaves in his household from 1840 to 1860; in 1870, his household also included a black servant and child (last name Oliver). In 1840, Benjamin had two other adult males (aged 20/30) and a female aged 15/20 living with him.

3 Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Cogle b 22 Apr 1841, Frankfort, KY, d 22 Mar 1910, m 22 Nov 1895, Trimble Co., KY, as her 2nd husband, Penola C. Robinson, b 16 Dec 1853, KY. Frank enlisted 13 Aug 1861, at Camp Jo Holt, Silver Creek, IN, in Co C, 2nd Regt KY Cavalry, serving until 17 Jul 1865, when he was honorably discharged at Lexington, NC, as Cpl. He was in the following battles: Shiloh, Chattanooga, Perryville, Frankfort, Atlanta, Savannah, Munfordsville. He was also in all the battles of the Atlanta Campaign, and on Sherman's march to the sea. While skirmishing between Goldsboro and Lexington, he was thrown from his horse, badly spraining his right ankle, injuring it so greatly that he was sent to the hospital at McDougal, 16 miles from New York City, where he remained about two months, returning to his regiment at Lexington, NC, where he was discarded on account of the closing of the war. After the war he returned to New Castle, remaining until he came to Boone Co., IN, about 1870, and engaged in farm work. He was pensioned at $12 per month. In politics he was a Republican. Apparently no children. Both bur Pisgah Cem., Montgomery Co., IN.

 

4 John Christopher Cogle b 25 Mar 1844, Frankfort, KY, d 11 Mar 1923, m 31 Jul 1883, Boone Co., IN, Mary Ann Garner, b 21 Aug 1862, IN, d 25 Jan 1891, dau of Elias and Susan (McIntire) Garner. John received a common education, and learned the candy and bakery business, which he followed in New Castle, KY. In Aug 1862, at age 19, he enlisted at Eminence, Henry Co., KY, in Co H, 9th KY Cavalry, and served until discharged Sep 1863 at Eminence as Sgt. He was in the Battle of Perryville, but was principally engaged against Morgan. He was in the famous chase after Morgan through KY, IN and OH, and when Morgan made his famous invasion of the latter state Sgt Cogle's battalion captured the rebel general and his men on the Ohio River. At the Battle of Perryville Sgt Cogle was severely wounded and his horse was shot dead from under him. His spine was injured and he lost the sight of his right eye. After the war he carried on a confectionery establishment at New Castle, until he came to Boone Co., in 1876, and engaged in farm work. After marriage, Mr. Cogle and wife settled down to farm life. He bought his present farm of fifty acres in 1892, and has a comfortable and pleasant home and $16 per month pension. Mr. Cogle votes with the Republican Party. He is a member of the I.O.O.F. of New Castle, KY, and was Treasurer of his lodge for several years. He is also a member of Thorntown lodge Free and Accepted Masons, and both he and brother Frank are members of the GAR of Advance, IN. Both bur Pisgah Cem., Montgomery Co., IN.

Thomas G. Cowgill (also as Cogill) b ca 1820, PA (or England on 1850 census; some children listed his birthplace, variously, as PA or Eng), d 2 Mar 1865, m 1 Dec 1844, Caroline (also as Catherine) Smith, b 1828, PA, d 14 Aug 1873. Thomas established Cogill & Wilt Woodworks (later Wilt Co.) as a successful business in Philadelphia. Thomas might possibly be the son of Samuel H. Cogill, b ca 1789, d 30 Apr 1822, Mobile, AL ("NJ mariner"). Samuel was in Philadelphia, appearing 1813 (as a teacher and mariner ?? in the city directory) through 1820. A William Colin Cogill, son of S(amuel?) H. Cogill, d 26 Aug 1816, age 1, and was bur Free Quaker Cem., Philadelphia. A Samuel G. Cogill, son of S(amuel?)H. Cogill, d 9 Mar 1820, age 1, also bur Free Quaker Cem. More research needed (is there an obit?).
