Nehemiah was “disowned” by the Haddonfield MM in 1745 for “marrying out”. NJ Archives Calendar of Wills, Vol 2, 1730-50, by Somerville Press, 1918, p117, "Cowgill, Nehemiah 1750 June 14, of Gloucester Co. Innholder. Intestate, Admnix. widow Esther Cowgill." Nehemiah had moved with his father to NJ and later (ca 1718) to Chesterfield Twp; was Overseer of Highways for Township in 1727; said to have lived in or near Haddonfield by 1733 before moving near Paulsboro, Gloucester Co., in 1749. Other sources for this line include Heston, Alfred M. South Jersey - A History, Vol IV, p258. Lewis Publishing Co., 1924, and Bible Records: Cowgill-Dawson-Jones, etc. Genealogical and Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA.

Children: known are - Thomas, Sarah, Joseph, Benjamin, Mary

1 Thomas Cowgill b 1719, Burlington, NJ, d after 1780 (1791?), m(1) 1748, Gloucester Co., Elizabeth ____, d 1772, Gloucester Co. (will 2145H B.15 p348 W 1772); m(2) _____ (assumed from tax lists where Thomas is shown as a married man in 1780). Thomas received a Certificate of Removal from Friends MM, Haddonfield, Gloucester Co., NJ, to Middletown MM, 14d 9m 1743; he is shown on the 1743 Tax Roll of Lower Makefield Twp, Bucks Co., PA, as a “single man” living with his uncle, Benjamin Linton. Thomas witnessed a will in Gloucester Co. in 1754, then appears on tax lists in Deptford Twp, Gloucester Co., from Nov 1779 to Jan 1781 (he was not on the Jul 1781 list). Thomas, probably this one, appears as a single man on the 1786 tax list, then as a “householder” through 1791.

Cowgill b 17 Jul 1749, d 18 May 1807 (aged 57y 10m), Gloucester Co., NJ, m 16 Aug 1773, Swedesboro, NJ, his 2nd cousin, Lydia Dawson, b 24 Mar 1750, d 10 Nov 1809 (aged 59y 7m) (see Record of Wills, NJ). William lived in Gloucester Co., appearing on tax rolls in Greenwich Twp as early as 1773, and on the Greenwich Twp enrollments of the 1793 NJ Militia Census (which included males aged 18/45); he probably owned property in Woolwich Twp as he also appears on tax lists there 1780-1782, though not shown as a householder. His estate (he d intestate, wife Lydia, administrator) inventory included: “a brown mare; a bay horse; a bay colt; two cows; three cows; two yearling bulls; twenty sheep; nine hogs; rye in the mow supposed to be 30 bushels; sundries in the barn; wood wagon; light wagon; plows ?? & sundries; two weavers looms & tacking; wearing apparel; two bedsteds, bed and bedding; a case of drawers; two tables, chest, and sundry household goods”.

Note: Apparently Lydia Dawson, wife of William, was the Lydia Cowgill (see Page 372) who was dismissed 25 Jul 1774 by Salem Friends Meeting “for mou”. Lydia Dawson was daughter of Richard and Lydia (Silver) Dawson (who were married Feb 1743, Burlington MM). Lydia Silver was daughter of Archibald and Mary (Cowgill) Silver, and Mary Cowgill was daughter of Ralph and Susannah (Pancoast) Cowgill, Ralph's second wife.

On 1 Aug 1800, Isaac is listed as co-bondsmen with his brother, William, and niece, Rachel, for the estate of Rachel’s husband, Philip Snailbecker; he is recorded as witness to wills and estate inventories in the county through 1823. Isaac is listed on the 1830 census, Greenwich Twp, Gloucester Co., NJ, as age 60/70, with females aged 5/10, 15/20, and 40/50 (presumably his wife). In the note referenced under Nehemiah, above, Isaac is said to have been a son of Thomas’ 2nd marriage (not likely, given his birth date range), to have married, and “had sons and daughters - two sons went West to Indiana. Others died without issue”.

3 Joseph Cowgill d 1796, Deptford Twp, Gloucester Co., NJ, m 1748/9 (1st intentions of marriage 12d 10m 1748, at Haddonfield MM, 2nd intentions 9d 11m 1748/9), Ann Arnold (record states "Ann Arnel of Arnold". Joseph was “jailer of Gloucester” in 1764. By an indenture dated 18 Oct 1786, Joseph sold 25 acres of land in Egg Harbor Twp which he had received by bequest (will) of a John Lewis. He appears as a householder on 11 acres in Deptford Twp on tax lists beginning Nov 1779 (1st year extant), through 1793. Joseph had bought the lot (“near a place called Deep Hollow on the northwest side of the road from Woodbury to Salem”) in May 1759. Joseph died intestate (NJ Wills 2010H B.36 p233 Int 1796), with his son-in-law, William Perkins, as Administrator. William subsequently bought Joseph’s 11 acre lot at public auction (see note under Jonathan, below). Joseph was appointed administrator of his brother Benjamin’s estate by the Gloucester Co. Orphan’s Court; his nephew Joseph twice contested his handling of the estate (see below).

Children: known are - Elizabeth, Jonathan (?)

1 Elizabeth Cowgill, m 11 Nov 1784 (date of NJ license), William Perkins.

2 Jonathan Cowgill, m ca 1794 ____. Jonathan is a possible son of Joseph. He appears adjacent to Joseph on the 1791 tax list, and on the 1795 list is taxed as a householder (indicating probable marriage by then) on 11 acres, which may be father Joseph’s 11 acres later (in 1799) sold by William Perkins, administrator of his estate, to cover Joseph’s outstanding debts. Jonathan was disciplined (10 Jun 1794) by the Quakers at Woodbury MM, and subsequently (Sep 1794) “dismissed” for non-attendance and “marriage contrary to discipline”. He appears on extant Gloucester Co. delinquent tax lists for 1798 and 1801. Jonathan is listed in the Philadelphia City Directory between 1803-1805 as a carpenter. No further information.

Children: unknown (possibly Arnold Cowgill on page 503 under “strays”; others?)

4 Benjamin Cowgill, d 1780? (a widow, unnamed, appears on the May 1780 tax roll for Woolwich Twp, Gloucester Co.; Catherine Cowgill, widow, appears on the same roll for Jul 1781), Gloucester Co., NJ, m(1) 31 May 1754 (date of NJ license), Gloucester Co., NJ, Sarah Ward; m(2) Catherine Chester, widow, d Mar 1801, bur 27 Mar 1801, Swedish Lutheran, later Trinity Episcopal Church, Swedesboro, where Catherine had been an active member. Strangely, Benjamin’s name is apparently not listed on any of the extant tax lists, although he had purchased 220 acres in Woolwich Twp on 19 Jun 1777 (mentioned in a 15 Oct 1784 indenture where son Joseph sold part of it to William Cowgill). Early records show that he contributed toward the building of a public school house “in the neighborhood of Swedesboro”, Woolwich Twp in 1772. Benjamin died intestate, and his estate was handled by the Gloucester Co. Orphan's Court, Joseph Cowgill (most likely Benjamin's brother), Administrator. Benjamin’s son, Joseph, went to court on several occasions, apparently unsuccessful, to contest his uncle’s handling of the estate.

1 Joseph Cowgill b 1760-1770 (from 1830 census), NJ, d 1831/1832, Delaware Co., IN, m(1) ca 1790 (assumed from tax record cited below; no record of first marriage, or name of first wife); m(2) (“Joseph Cowgill, farmer, a widower, of Woolwich Township“) 19 Aug 1802, Moravian Church, Oldmans Creek, Gloucester Co., NJ, Hannah Harris, a single lady, “of the same place, by Rev Samuel Towle” (Records of the Moravian Church), b 29 Oct 1779, d 1 Sep 1843, Jonesboro, Grant Co., IN.

In an indenture dated 28 Feb 1808 (apparently to make up for a lost deed for the sale of the same property in 1784), Joseph sold property once owned by Benjamin to William Cowgill. In the indenture, Joseph is described as Benjamin’s “only surviving heir at law”. Joseph contested his uncle’s (Joseph, brother of Benjamin) handling of his father’s estate before the Gloucester Co. Orphan’s Court in 1789 and 1794, neither time successfully. A note, without source, says Joseph was left an orphan about 14 years of age. Joseph appears on Woolwich Twp, Gloucester Co. tax rolls for 1781 as having assets (horses and cows), but not a householder; for 1782, he is classified as a “single man”; not located on the rolls for 1783 to 1788; listed as a “shopkeeper”, but not householder, in 1789; and as a householder from 1790 through 1795 (not located on the 1796 roll). Joseph is listed on the Woolwich Twp enrollments of the 1793 NJ Militia Census (which included males aged 18/45).

Joseph Cowgill, and wife Hannah, bought land in Lebanon, Warren Co., OH, in 1819 (he appears there on the 1820 and 1830 censuses); sold same in 1830. Joseph Cowgill bought land 16 Dec 1830, Delaware Co., IN (across the border from OH). Histories of Delaware County, Indiana, lists Joseph with "those who came during the 1830's Township 19, range 11, Perry Township"; "Original possessors of Delaware soil Sec 21, Sep 1829, 1836; and Sec 21, 1830, purchased farms in Perry Township, located in s.e. corner township of county, White River." Joseph Cowgill's Will, signed 26 Jul 1831, proved 31 Jan 1832, of Liberty Twp, Delaware Co., IN, named his son William Cowgill, his grandsons George W. Cowgill, Joseph Cowgill, Abraham K. Cowgill, Timothy B. Cowgill, and granddaughters Susan and Rebecca Cowgill. Joseph's Will was quite lengthy; filed in Delaware Co., IN. There is no record of children by Hannah. Hannah Cowgill (Joseph’s widow) remarried 4 Jul 1832, Delaware Co., IN, to William Bates.
