Ingham Cowgill, son of James and Jane (Catlow) Cowgill, b 1 Jun 1838, Cowling, d 9 Apr 1922, New Westminster, BC, m 25 Jun 1865, Morton, Hannah Waddington, b 28 Jan 1844, Morton (Bingley), d 1 Jul 1926, New Westminster, dau of Anne (Deemside) Waddington. Ingham was an engine tester in Morton in 1871; in Keighley by 1881. He and his family emigrated to Canada in 1904, settling in Strathcona, Alberta, Later in BC. Ingham's forbears may be found on the page of Bryan Cowgill, son of James.

2 Ann Cowgill b 1867, Morton (Bingley), m 1897, Keighley, Ellis Shackleton. Not known to have emigrated.

 

3 William Cowgill b 21 Oct 1868, Morton (Bingley), m 1896, Bedfordshire, Emily Johanna Steer, b ca 1866, Bedfordshire. William was in Bradford in 1901 as a stationary engine driver. He emigrated to Canada in 1904.

 

4 Mary Cowgill b 1870, Morton (Bingley), m 1896, Keighley, Fred Daker. Not known to have emigrated.

 

5 Maria Cowgill b 6 Feb 1872, Morton (Bingley), m 23 Aug 1911, Victoria, Andrew Baker, b ca 1865, son of David and Susannah Baker. Lodging with parents in 1901. She emigrated to Canada with her family in 1904, settling in Strathcona, Alberta.

 

6 Jane Cowgill b 24 Sep 1875, Morton (Bingley), m 13 Jun 1904, Primitive Methodist Chapel, Keighley, John William Ambler, b ca 1875. John was an accountant in Keighley.

 

7 Ruth Cowgill b 10 Oct 1878, Morton (Bingley), d 20 Jan 1977, m George Lewis Saunders, b 23 Feb 1878, d 21 Oct 1949. Lodging with parents in 1901. She emigrated to Canada with her family in 1904, settling in Strathcona, Alberta; later in BC.

 

8 Fred Cowgill b 6 Dec 1882, Keighley, d 24 Mar 1968, New Westminster, BC. Lodging with parents in 1901. He emigrated to Canada with his family in 1904, settling in Strathcona, Alberta.

 

9 James Ingham Cowgill (2nd) b 1886, Keighley, d before 1920 (? - need cert), m ca 1913, Strathcona(?), Gertrude Viola Roth, b Mar 1895, NE, dau of Adolf and Mary Roth. He emigrated to Canada with his family in 1904, settling in Strathcona, Alberta. He must have returned briefly to the UK, but was back in Canada by 1917. Gertrude m(2) 28 Apr 1926, Lewis Co., WA, Frank T. Adams, b ca 1890; div by 1940. Her family had moved from NE to Strathcona ca 1901. She was in Thurston Co., WA, by 1930.

1  James Kenneth Cowgill b 14 May 1913, Keighley, d 26 Feb 2005, m(1) 15 Jun 1940, Pasadena, CA, Doris Elizabeth Smith, b 26 Aug 1917, CA, d 26 Dec 1991, dau of Charles and Iva Smith; m(2) as her 4th husband, Sundie Delores Rillo, b 7 Jun 1920, PA, d 10 Jan 2013. James was a steel worker in Los Angeles in 1940. Last address: Thousand Oaks, Ventura, CA. 

       Children: known are - Linda, Kay, William, James, John, Mary, Steven, Don

Eldon was a woodworker in Olympia in 1940. Gertrude and George bur Howard/Hardcastle Family Cem., Devine, TX.

Thomas Cowgill, son of Henry and Sarah (Slack) Cowgill, b 31 Jan 1844 (bapt 17 Dec 1845, St Andrew’s, Kildwick), Glusburn, m(1) 24 Dec 1866, St Paul’s, Shipley, Ann Whitehouse, b ca 1848, Horsforth, bur 29 Jul 1872, age 26, St Andrew’s, Keighley, dau of George and Hannah Whitehouse; m(2) 7 May 1873, Keighley, Lucy Ellen Forden, b ca 1840, Cheshire, d 1908, Keighley. Thomas was in Hapton, Lancashire, in 1861 as a cotton carder; a worsted spinner in Leicester St Mary in 1871; he emigrated, without family, 4 Oct 1880 (port of entry New York) on the “P Caland”. He is shown as working in a woolen mill in Lawrence, MA, in 1880, boarding with brother Crossley (Crosby) at the Carroll Street Washington Corp Boarding House. No further information. Lucy is listed as a widow, with the children in Keighley in 1881. Thomas and Crossley are presumed cousins of Ingham Cowgill of Canada (see the page of Bryan Cowgill, son of James).

Crosley (also as Crosby and Crossley) Cowgill (brother of Thomas Cowgill) b 7 Mar 1849 (bapt 25 Jul 1852, St Andrew’s, Kildwick), Glusburn, d 12 Nov 1900, Lawrence, MA, m(1) 11 Mar 1871, Eastbrook Chapel, Bradford, Mary Crowther, d 12 Sep 1893, age 52, dau of James and Susan Crowther; m(2) 2 Oct 1900, Lawrence, MA, Selina Preston, b ca 1868, England, dau of Henry and Jane (Bradley) Preston. Selina remarried 4 Oct 1902 to Peter Paul. Crosley was lodging with his uncle James in 1861; he emigrated, apparently alone, 31 Jan 1880 (port of entry New York) on the “Baltic”. He is listed in 1880 as a carpenter, single, boarding with brother Thomas at the Carroll Street Washington Corp Boarding House in Lawrence, MA. He naturalized 12 Oct 1889 in Lawrence, appears in the Lawrence City Directory from 1881 through 1900, but is not listed on the 1900 census. This is probably the male (name illegible) Cowgill, age 31, laborer, who arrived in New York on 23 Aug 1880 aboard the “Helvetia” with wife Mary, age 32, dau Mary, aged 7, and son Samuel, aged 4. The next passenger on the list was a James Crowther, aged 31 (a brother of Mary?).

2 Samuel Cowgill b 25 Jul 1875, Bradford, d 6 Apr 1952, m 16 Jun 1904, Beverly, MA, as her 2nd husband, Victoria (Smith) Kimball, b 1870, NS (Canada), d 21 Nov 1934, dau of Alexander and Eliza (Remby) Smith. Samuel claimed (on the 1900 census) to have immigrated 1878; he was a carpenter in Lawrence, later Beverly, MA. Family unknown (if any).

James emigrated to the US in 1881 (naturalized 11 Nov 1893, Providence). He is shown as a woolen weaver in Providence, RI, in 1900; in Philadelphia in 1910. James is a distant cousin of Ingham Cowgill (see the page of Bryan Cowgill, son of James).

Simpson Cowgill, son of John and Ellen (Simpson) Cowgill and nephew of James A. Cowgill (above), b 28 Sep 1885, Embsay, d Nov 1983, m 1915, Bradford, Eva P. Hustler, b ca 1887. Simpson and family emigrated to the US, arriving 2 Sep 1923 into Boston on the "Carmania". He is shown as a bricklayer in Newark, NJ, in 1930. Last address Wayne, NJ (see the page of Bryan Cowgill, son of James).
