John Coweguill b ????, d Aug 1813, m Elizabeth _____, b ca 1780, d 14 Aug 1845 (age 65y), bur New Haven Cem., Hamilton (near Cincinnati), OH (her tombstone describes her as “consort of John”). A tax list of 1807 shows John Coweguil in Morgan Twp, Butler Co., OH. John was apparently not a man of means as it took him nearly ten years to come up with the $100 to purchase his 16 acre farm (note to Beatrice Cowgill from George Iseminger). There is an Indenture of Deed to heirs of John dated 3 May 1816. Elizabeth may have been a second wife, as she would have been age 33 when John died. Elizabeth m(2) 20 Jul 1816, by JP William D. Jones, Archibald Stansbury. It appears from various records that Elizabeth continued to use the Cowguill surname until after her death, as did the twins (children 6 and 7) and their descendants. No record of death of Stansbury has been located. Hamilton Co. court records (15 Jan 1818, and later dates) show Elizabeth and James Ware were appointed guardians of the legitimate heirs of John, specifically listed by name and age – the list omitted the twins. A James Waer, b 4 Jul 1787, d 3 Sep 1828, is bur in Butler Co.; a James Wear m Mary Lister 12 Oct 1811 in Butler Co. Note: given ages of the twins, there is the likely possibility that Archibald was the father, that he died early after marriage, and that Elizabeth resumed Cowguill name and gave it to her two youngest. Descendants Esther Thompson of Pasadena, CA; Becky Cauble, NC; and Dorothy Sifferd, MO, provided information on this line.

Samuel was in Jefferson Parish, LA, in 1850, where he is shown as the owner of 13 slaves; he bought several parcels of land in St. Charles Co. in 1854; in 1859, apparently heavily indebted, he turned over property to Joseph H.
