John's marriage record to Charlotte lists his father as Thomas, mother as Elizabeth. Could this be the Thomas Cogill b ca 1780, d 9 Sep 1855, age 75, in Burlington Co., NJ? Census records and a NJ history show his birthplace as Long Island, NY, but son Franklin's pension application says Salem Co., NJ. On the 1880 census John claimed his father's birthplace as Scotland. Children Franklin, Lilly, and Elizabeth were parties to a guardian petition in the Sep 1862 term of the Salem Co. Orphans Court. John was described as a carriage builder. He served on the Salem City police force, and was City of Salem Surveyor of Highways 1854-1856. He also served a term in the NJ legislature as a Democrat.

Franklin was a veteran of the Civil War, serving as a private in Co K, 107th Pennsylvania Infantry, mustering in 15 Aug 1864 and mustering out (on a disability discharge) 1 Jul 1865; he was transferred to the 23rd Co, 2nd Bn VRC as a Sgt. He applied for an invalid pension 11 Nov 1865 (application # 97751, cert # 301545); his widow, Phebe J., applied for a pension in 1907. From his pension file, it appears Franklin spent most of his service time in the hospital.
