Isaac Cowgill b 4 Jun 1703, Burlington Co., NJ, d 6 Dec 1766, Chesterfield Twp, Burlington Co., NJ, m 31 Dec 1730, Haddonfield MM, Rachel Briggs, b 16 May 1709, d 8 May 1782, dau of John and Sarah (Smith) Briggs, of Burlington Co. Sarah was sister of Joyce (Smith) Cowgill, wife of Nehemiah Cowgill. Isaac’s will, dated 9 Jan 1765, proved 31 Dec 1766 in Burlington Co., NJ, provided to his wife, Rachel, profits of several tracts of land, and after her death, said lands to go to his sons George and Isaac; son, John, £50; daughter, Rachel Hall, £50; granddaughters, Lydia and Rachel Cowgill (daus of John and Jemima), £15 each when aged 18. Executors were wife Rachel, Joseph Curtis, and Aaron Watson. Rachel’s will, proved 25 May 1782, provided dau Rachel Hall her apparel, son Isaac “all my grain”, and the residue of her estate to children George, John, Isaac, and Rachel. Isaac was co-executor (with George Briggs) of his father-in-law’s estate.

Children: known are - George, John, Sarah and Lydia (twins), Jacob, Isaac, Rachel

1 George Cowgill Sr b 6 Sep 1731, NJ, d ???, m 12 Mar 1755, Springfield, Burlington Co., NJ, Elizabeth Crammer, “spinster” (signed by uncle; bondsman Samuel Woodard, witnesses Joseph Hollingshead and Samuel Peart – see p286, New Jersey Marriages, PA Gen Soc). Elizabeth, a Quaker, had transferred membership from Little Egg Harbor MM to Burlington MM on 1 Jan 1755. She was "condemned" for "marrying out of unity" 6 Mar 1758. George was bequeathed “my riding creature” in his grandfather’s (John Briggs) will; he is shown on the tax lists of Evesham Twp, Burlington Co., NJ, for Sep and Aug 1774. He is also shown as the seller in two land transactions in Burlington Co. dated 30 and 31 Mar 1774. In that year, George and family moved to VA, where he purchased 200 acres on Cedar Run, in southern Culpeper Co. near the Madison and Orange county lines, on 2 May 1774 (Culpeper Co. Deed Book G:214-218). He sold this parcel 15 Mar 1784, and bought (same date) another 200 acre parcel, apparently nearby, from the purchaser of his original plot (Culpeper Co. Deed Book M:112-115 and 107-109). He and Elizabeth are shown as sellers of this 2nd parcel on 21 Mar 1786 (Culpeper Co. Deed Book N:190-192). George is shown on tax lists for Culpeper, Orange, and Madison (formed from Culpeper in 1792) counties through 1800, but is not on the 1801 list. George and Elizabeth are listed in 1807 Warren Co., OH, marriage records as agreeing to the marriage of their granddaughter Elizabeth Cowgill (who is she?) to Thomas Hudgell. Note: Culpeper Co. marriages list the marriage of a Susannah Cowgill to George Peyton, 15 Apr 1792, by John Coons or Koonts, MG (Baptist). If a Cowgill, Susannah would be another child of George’s. She is more likely a Coghill – there were several Coghill families near George in Culpeper and Madison counties. There is no mention of Susannah in Mary Cowgill’s will.

Note: The discovery of Mary Cowgill’s will (see below) by Maryln Wolever resulted in a major revision to this line from what is printed in “Cowgill History”. What follows is a change from the original text – the George (and descendents) formerly listed here as descendents of George Sr are now listed in an appendix as a “stray”.

Children: known are – Daniel, Jacob, Ralph, Beulah, John, George, Isaac, Mary, Hannah, Sarah (order uncertain)

1 Daniel Cowgill b 9 Oct 1755, Burlington, NJ, d 14 Jun 1843, Grant Co., KY, m(1) 1 Aug 1785, Orange Co., VA, Betsy "Elizabeth" Martin, dau of Ann (____) (Martin) Bowen, bond signed by step-father, John Bowen. Betsy is said to have d 10 Jan 1792, Bourbon Co., KY, perhaps at birth of their third child. Have no proof. Daniel m(2) 23 Jan 1793, Bourbon Co., KY, Franky Davis (bondsman Zephania Pratt), d before 1807; m(3) 18 Oct 1807, by Geo. Hume (p 4, Marriage records, Campbell Co., KY), Elizabeth Jones, apparently a widow. (In Sep 1810, an Elizabeth Cowgill gave consent for marriage of Moses Wayman to Ruth Jones. Was she Elizabeth’s dau?).

Daniel, then of Orange Co., VA, was one of the signatories to the “Ten Thousand Name Petition” (protesting certain restrictive religious legislation under consideration) read in the House of Burgesses 13 Jun 1775. While living in Culpeper Co., VA, Daniel enlisted (1777) for service in the Revolutionary War as a private, Virginia State Troops, in a light horse company commanded by Captain John Yancy; served under Col Crocket, marching into SC; permitted to leave in 1778; reenlisted 1779 in Culpeper Co., serving under Col Mark Thomas; marched to the Falls of the Ohio, serving under Gen George Rogers Clark two years; discharged 1781; returned to Culpeper after the war. In Daniel’s Rev War file he stated he had sent his first discharge papers back to his father in VA, as he enlisted again.

Daniel appears on tax lists (near George Sr, George Jr, Jacob, Isaac, and Ralph) in Culpeper Co., VA in 1787 through 1789; by 1791, he is in KY (Bourbon Co. tax list in 1791, Clark Co. 1793-1796, Montgomery Co. 1797-1800). He appears on the 1810 census of Campbell Co., KY (in Aug 1807 he had bought 100 acres on Back Lick Creek in what was later Kenton Co.; sold on 27 Dec 1816); in Butler Co., OH on the 1820 census (he bought property there in 1819, sold in 1823); the 1830 census in Preble Co., OH (where his Revolutionary War pension application #S3199 – granted 1833 by Certificate # 7025 - was filed); and in Fayette Co., KY in 1840 with son George. Daniel filed a paper (Deed Book 16, p 442) in Fayette Co., dated 11 Oct 1839, in which he “nominated, constituted, and appointed … George Cowgill of Fayette County, Kentucky, and John Bruen of Grant County, Kentucky, my true and lawful agents and attorneys for me and in my name to do and transact all of my businesses of every description throughout the Union”. Apparently, Daniel was a property speculator, which explains his many moves and property transactions in Kentucky and Ohio. He drew his last pension check Mar 1843 in Grant Co., KY. A graves registration card from Jefferson Twp, Preble Co., OH, places Daniel’s grave there in Old New Paris Cem. However, there is a marker for Daniel in Franks Cem., also known as the “Old” Cem., at Mt Zion Baptist Church, Grant Co., which would seem to be a more logical place. Which one has his body?

Note: Daniel’s claim that his father was in VA during his (Daniel’s) war service strongly supports George as his father, as George lived near Daniel in Culpeper Co. (Daniel is the likely 2nd tithable living in George’s household in 1786) and is the only senior Cowgill in the county during that period. Two problems arise in asserting this link: Daniel’s birthdate (9 Oct 1755) and George’s marriage date (12 Mar 1755), and the fact that neither Daniel nor his heirs are mentioned in (alleged) sister Mary’s will (see Page 390b). The dates issue can be explained away (premature birth, etc), but omission from the will is more troubling. Had they simply lost contact, had a family dispute, …? Regardless, the weight of evidence supports linking Daniel with George.

Daniel's will, dated 28 Aug 1842 (probated 10 Jul 1843), is filed (Book B, page 385) Grant Co., KY. John Bruen is listed as an executor; John is probably the father of William Henry Bruen, who married Daniel’s granddaughter Mary (see Page 374n/452).

Fanny’s mother requested the marriage license, and Fanny, being underage, had to give separate consent (in extant Campbell Co. documents). Joseph and family appear in Campbell Co., KY, in census of 1810, 1820, and 1830, then in Henry Co., IN, 1840, 1850 and 1860 (where he is listed as “George”). Joseph served (briefly) in the War of 1812 as a private in Cpt James Ellis' Co, 16th Regt (LtCol Andrew Porter's), KY Vol Militia, mustering in 10 Sep 1814 and mustering out 9/10 Oct 1814. Newspaper Article, 20 Jan 1922:

KANSAS CITY MAYOR DIES IN CONFERENCE

J. S. COWGILL stricken by Apoplexy While Criticising Conduct of Vice Crusade

KANSAS CITY Jan. 20. - Mayor James S. Cowgill, 74 years old, dropped dead when stricken by apoplexy in his office today.

Police Commissioners Foster and Wilson said that the Mayor had called them to his office to confer on a crusade recently begun by the Commissioners against women of the streets. The Commissioners had complained of lack of co-operation from city health officials. Mr Foster said the Mayor accused him and Mr Wilson of insincerity in their efforts, and told them they had failed to ask city officials for co-operation in the crusade.

"I noticed," Mr. Foster said, "that the Mayor was growing pale about the lips. He dropped forward and died a few moments later."

Mayor Cowgill was serving his second two-year term which would have expired this Spring. He was a Democrat. He had a large ranching interest near Garden City, KS.

Page 390

2 Jacob Cowgill, son of George and Elizabeth (Crammer) Cowgill, b ca 1757, d 1821, Burlington Co., NJ, m(1) 15 Nov 1777 (Jacob “of Burlington Co.” in New Jersey Marriages (NJ Archives)), Burlington Co., Parthena Imley; m(2) _____ , as her 2nd husband, Martha (Harris) Reeves (widow of Isaiah Reeves), b 1746, d 24 Aug 1830 (elsewhere shown as 31 Aug, bur Mt Holly Cem., age 85, NJ State Gazeteer, 4 Sep 1830). A Jacob Cowgill of Chesterfield Twp, Burlington Co., had a son (not named, but probably Stephen) b 5 Nov 1778. Jacob was in Culpeper Co., VA, by 1782, where he is listed on tax records near his father until 1785. He also appears on a Culpeper Co. militia list in the early 1780s (no specific date) in “Class 14 of Culpeper Classes” (lists of men and boys selected by the county for aid to Lafayette and the Continental Army). Jacob is shown as a witness to the sale of his father’s land in Culpeper Co. on 21 Mar 1786.

Jacob apparently moved back to Burlington Co. in the late 1780s. He is named in a 16 Oct 1792 newspaper item listing individuals with letters at the Trenton PO as Jacob of Springfield Twp, Burlington Co.; he appears on tax and militia ("enrolled, decreed, and esteemed a part of the NJ Militia") lists in Mansfield Twp, Burlington Co., for 1793, and on tax lists in Northampton Twp, same county, for 1796 through 1814 (the lists for 1814 to 1819 are lost). On 30 Aug 1796, a Jacob Cowgill of Mt Holly, Burlington Co., is mentioned as having tenure of a house in High Street owned by Dr John Ross, deceased. Since Jacob had died by the time of sister Mary Cowgill’s will, his allotment was given to her nephew Aaron, presumably Jacob’s only living heir.

Note: Both Joseph C. Cowgill and Harry Whitfield Cogill claimed Jacob was the son of John Cowgill, Revolutionary War veteran, in their submissions to join the SAR (see below and Page 391). There is no evidence to support these claims.

Children: known are – Stephen, Aaron, Charles

1 Stephen Cowgill b 5 Nov 1778, Burlington Co., NJ, d ca 1810, m 11 Nov 1804, Burlington Co. (county clerk records), by Thomas Adams, JP, Alice “Ally” Simons, b 27 Mar 1785, d 20 Jun 1821, dau of John and Anna Simons. Alice, “widow of Stephen Cowgill”, m(2) 5 Dec 1813, Philadelphia, as his 2nd wife 5 Dec 1813, Col William Bozarth. Stephen (as “Cowgill”) bought a lot in Northampton Twp Oct 1805, and appears on the 1805 tax list as Stephen Cogill, householder, near Jacob in Northampton Twp, Burlington Co., NJ. Apparently no children.

2 Aaron Cowgill b 1793, NJ, d 7 Jan 1884, m(1) 31 Mar 1814, Burlington Co., NJ, by Wilson McGowan, Sarah Kelley, b ca 1792, d 21 Jul 1846, aged 55; m(2) 15 Oct 1848, Mt Holly, by Rev. W. E. Perry, as her 2nd husband, Sarah F. (Risdon) Morgan, b ca 1815, d 16 Aug 1874 (in her will, Sarah left everything to her son and executor, Joseph). Aaron had a female, aged 80-90, listed in his household in 1830, probably his mother, Martha Cowgill, who d 31 Aug 1830 in Mt Holly Twp, aged 85. Aaron and son Joseph were partners in a grocery store in Mt Holly for many years; Aaron was living with Joseph in 1880, and made him executor of his will. Aaron and both wives bur Mt Holly Cem.

Children: known are - Charles K., Deborah Ann, Joseph C.

1 Charles K. Cowgill b 1814, Buddtown, Burlington, NJ, d 31 Jan 1885, m 6 Dec 1840, Sarah Ann Reeves, b 1813, NJ, d 26 Nov 1884, dau of John Harris and Hope (Jones) Reeves. Named as son in Aaron’s will (received $1000 bequest). Charles had two teenage and two young adult males living with him in 1840; probably in-laws or workers. Charles operated a coach factory in Mt Holly.

Children: known are – Henry, Hope

1 Henry M. Cowgill b 1843, NJ, d 10 Apr 1885, age 42y. Henry was listed in the Mt Holly Directory as a photographer. Apparently single.

2 Hope Elizabeth Cowgill b 6 Apr 1852, NJ, m 31 Mar 1881, Mt Holly, Edward Hack, b Feb 1857, NJ.

2 Deborah Ann Cowgill b 1824, d 8 May 1852, Mt Holly. Single, bur Mt Holly Cem.

3 Joseph Crozier Cowgill b Oct 1849, NJ, d 19 Feb 1929, m 3 Nov 1870, Philadelphia, by Rev. C. P. Masden, Rebecca Sooy Naylor, b Sep 1851, NJ, d 19 May 1925. Both bur Mt Holly Cem. Joseph worked with and then succeeded his father as a grocer in Mt Holly. From an obit in the Mount Holly Herald: “Joseph, aged 79, died at his home in the Arlington Apartments, Tuesday evening, from a week long bout of bronchitis and pneumonia. He was a local businessman and local historian. He was born on Pine St., in Mount Holly, son of Aaron Cowgill. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. B.C. Jutten, of East Orange.”

Note: in 1906, Joseph applied for membership in The Society of The Sons of The American Revolution (SAR). He was admitted as a member based on his lineage (unlike the DAR, no documentation was submitted as proof) as the son of Aaron (1793-1884) and 2nd wife Sarah F. Risdon, GS of Jacob (1755-1821) and Martha Harris, GGS of John Cowgill (1732-1799) and unknown wife, veteran of the Revolutionary War as a pvt in Cpt Jacob Cooper's Co, Maj Samuel Hayes's Bn, NJ State Troops, GGGS of Isaac Cowgill (1703-1766) and Rachel, and GGGGS of Ralph Cowgill (1667-1756) and 2nd wife Susannah Pancoast. Presumably, Joseph (and see also below, Charles Cogill) should have known his GGF’s name. The John Cowgill he claims (see Page 391) had two children, both female, by his first wife. These two were named in GGGS Isaac’s will of 1765. John remarried in 1761, and if he had other children before 1766, Isaac did not recognize them. But since both Joseph and Charles claimed GF Jacob’s birth year as 1755 (more likely 1757), it appears highly unlikely that their GF Jacob could be John’s son.

Child:

1 Irene Warren Cowgill b 1873, NJ, d 1943, m 22 Jun 1904, Mt Holly, Benjamin Chauncey Jutten, b 1871, NJ, d 1947. Irene and family were living with her parents in 1910. They may have been in England in the 1920s as both their parent's wills had provisions for her through UK attorneys. Both bur Mt Holly Cem.

3 Charles Cogill b 1790s?, d ca 1837, m 10 Oct 1822 (announced in Poulson's Daily American Advertiser of 6 Oct 1822 – was this a 2nd m for Charles?) Mary Whitfield Morris, b 19 Mar 1793 (living with son John in 1850 and 1860), d 16 Aug 1861, bur Riverview Cem., Trenton. In an application for membership to The Society of The Sons of The American Revolution, dated 5 Dec 1899, Harry Whitfield Cogill of Trenton (see below) bases his claim to membership on being the “Son of Edward B. and Delia (Field) Cogill; grandson of Charles and Mary Whitfield (Morris) Cogill; great-grandson of Jacob and Martha (Harris) Cowgill; great2-grandson of John Cowgill, private, New Jersey State Troops” (see Page 391 and Note above under Joseph Cowgill).

This is probably the Charles Cogill listed in Philadelphia City Directories as a tailor beginning 1823 through 1833 (not there in 1837). Charles also appears on the 1830 census in Philadelphia in a household that included a male b 1810-1815, and a female b 1815-1820 (children from an earlier m or servants?). Mary appears on the 1840 census of Mercer Co. with a male (not head of household) b 1760-1770 living with her in 1840. Also had 2 f b 1800-1810 living with her in 1840, and three males b 1824-1833. On the 1840 census she appears with sons John (head of household), George, Charles, and James, one of whom is not counted on the 1840 entry. Edward first appears on the 1860 census nearby in Trenton. Note: what follows is a tentative outline for this family based on the SAR entry and census associations.

3 Ralph Cowgill, son of George and Elizabeth (Crammer) Cowgill, b between 1750 – 1760 (from 1830 census, Anderson Co., KY; is Ralph the son born to George 5 Jan 1760?), NJ, d 9 Nov 1835, Anderson Co., KY, m(1) 1785, Orange Co., VA, Sarah Reynolds, d bef 1820 (but after 1810); m(2) 30 Jan 1821, Franklin Co., KY, Mary "Polly" Poindexter, b ca 1800. Ralph was living in VA when he enlisted as a Private in Cpt Harrison's Co, VA Infantry (Revolutionary War), rendezvousing at Petersburg. He applied for a pension 18 Mar 1832 (BLW # 10267-160-55) from Anderson Co., which was allowed 18 Mar 1832. He was to receive $80 annually, starting 5 Feb 1833. Mary applied for a widow’s pension 12 Apr 1853 (allowed same date) at age 53 or 55, a resident of Camdenville, Anderson Co. According to Ralph’s pension application, he injured his back while helping build a fort; he was engaged in the siege of "96" and the siege of Yorktown.

Ralph appears on tax lists with his father and brothers in Culpeper Co. from 1786 to 1792, and Madison Co. (formed from Culpeper in 1792) to 1807. In 1790, he had listed with him, Edward Wait, his brother-in-law. Ralph is listed in Deed Book 1 (p 95), Madison Co., VA, involving a transaction on 26 Apr 1796, when he purchased 85 acres from Philip Slaughter; he and Sarah signed an indenture for 851/2 acres of land “Cowgill now lives on” in Madison Co., 17 Nov 1803 (Deed Book 3, p 460). This indenture has the marginal note “Exd & Deliv’d Jany 31st 1807”. He is not shown as a landowner in 1804, but is listed in 1805/6 as owning 144 acres “of Good” (previous owner). He was taxed as a landless individual in Madison Co. in 1806 and 1807, after which he presumably lived in KY. Ralph received a $100 bequest in sister Mary Cowgill’s will.

Ralph is shown on the 1810 Census in Woodford Co., KY, on tax lists from 1817-1824 in Franklin Co. (and on the 1820 census), and in Anderson Co. (created out of Franklin in 1827) on tax lists from 1827 to 1835 (no records for 1831/1832/1834), and on the 1830 Census. In Apr 1832, Ralph lived in Spencer Co., KY, apparently returning to Anderson Co. by the time of his death. On the 1820 census, Ralph is shown with two females under age 5, and a female aged 26/45. Might these be his dau and granddaughters who lived nearby? Where were his widow and minor children in 1840?

Children: known are (presumed from census records cited; the 1829 tax list has two children between ages 4 and 15, and one child at school; possibly others b before census records or who were b and d between censuses) – Letitia, son, son, son

1 Letitia Cowgill b ca 1786, VA, d bef 1837, m 20 Sep 1815, Franklin Co., KY, David Layton, b ca 1786, PA, d after 1850 (probably in IL). David remarried ca 1837.

2 son? b 1794-1800, VA (left home or d bef 1820). No further information.

3 son? b 1821-1825 (from 1830 census). No further information.

4 son? b 1825-1830 (from 1830 census; could this be the George, b ca 1828, KY, m Hester A. ____, b ca 1835, KY, listed on Anderson Co. censuses variously as Cougill and Coghill? Need tax or other data to confirm the name).

4 Beulah Cowgill b 3 Aug 1763, NJ, d bef 1840, m 10 Nov 1784, Springfield, Burlington Co., NJ, John (called George in Mary Cowgill’s will) West (NJ Marriages), b 26d 9m 1736, d 17 Dec 1813. Six of her children were named in Mary Cowgill’s will.

5 John Cowgill (presumed son of George and Elizabeth Crammer Cowgill) b bef 1767, NJ, d early?. A John Cowgill appears on the 1783 Culpeper Co. personal property tax list with George Sr and Jacob Cowgill. His taxable assets (one horse, no cattle) indicate a relatively young man. If so, he must have died before 1825 and without issue, since he is not mentioned in Mary Cowgill’s will.

Note: Benson J. Lossing, in New History of The United States, p20, mentions that Daniel Cowgill had a brother, John, also born in Burlington Co., NJ, who was a private in Capt Cooper’s Co. in the Revolutionary War. This John is supposedly buried in Logan Co., OH, in a country churchyard between East Liberty and West Middleburg. The Bellefontaine chapter of the DAR was said to have this record. This John is also mentioned in Sanderson’s History of Mahoning Co. (p225), and in History of Columbiana Co., p 309. The Mahoning chapter of the DAR is also said to have records of this John. Beatrice Cowgill queried one or both of these chapters and got a negative response. Apparently Lossing and Sanderson confused this John with the John Cowgill on page 131, the only Revolutionary War Cowgill veteran known buried in OH (in Clinton Co.). Stryker (see page 391) claimed the John Cowgill who served in Capt Cooper’s Company is the one on page 391, which seems more logical.

6 George Cowgill Jr b ca 1770, NJ, d Jun 1825, Springfield Twp, Clark Co., OH, m 15 Sep 1792, Orange Co., VA, Phebe Wait (also Waite) (who writes her own consent; surety: Edward Wait; witness: James Taylor, who also witnessed marriage of Isaac Cowgill and Sally Gillock), dau of John and Keziah Wait. Phebe (also Phoebe) was sister to Edward, who married George’s sister Hannah, and to Benjamin, husband of sister Sarah (see below). George appears on tax lists in Culpeper and Madison counties from 1791 (presumably reached tithable age of 21) through 1805 (last year he appears on Madison Co. tax lists – he was not a landowner there). He moved to OH ca 1807; he is listed on the 1820 census of Clark Co., OH. George’s will, dated 29 Sep 1821, was submitted 6 Jun 1825 and proved 19 Nov 1825. In her will, Mary Cowgill (see below, child # 8) made a bequest of $100 “to the widow of my brother George” (not named), and “if she should not be living at my decease” … “to her daughter Nancy Killburn”. Records list a payment to Phoebe Cowgill through her attorney.

2 John Cowgill, son of Isaac and Rachel (Briggs) Cowgill, b 17 Jan 1732/33, NJ, d 9 Nov 1799 (Family Bible), m(1) 12 Jan 1754, Burlington Co., NJ, Jemima Johnston (under NJ Marriages); m(2) 12 Nov 1761, Burlington Co. (NJ Archives), Elizabeth Ridgeway. John had trouble with the Quakers over his marriages. The Burlington MM minutes of 3 Oct 1757: "John Cowgill appeared at this meeting, & produced a paper acknowledging that he had trouble of mind, for marrying contrary to the way of his vocation, & expressing his hopes that his future conversation may render him worthy of friend's future care & oversight, which was read & received". Then in Feb 1765, the minutes reported the publishing of a “Testimoney” against John who “having for some time made Profession with us but having so gone out from us as to be charged with being the Father of a Child by a young woman that was not his wife and afterward marrying another, and being very negligent in attending our Religious Meetings, … to be a person with whom we can have no Unity”.

According to Stryker (Index to Military Men of New Jersey 1775-1815), this is the John Cowgill who served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Capt Cooper's Co, NJ State Troops (raised in late 1781/early 1782; John is on an extant roster dated 12 Apr 1782) and in Shreve's Bn, Burlington Militia (which may have contained Capt Cooper’s Co). Two SAR submissions (see Page 390), for Joseph C. Cowgill and for Harry Whitfield Cogill, claim membership based on this John being the father of the Jacob Cowgill who married Martha (Harris) Reeves and had sons Aaron and Charles. A John Cowgill appears as a householder on tax lists in Springfield Twp in 1780, and in Northampton Twp, Burlington Co., NJ, from 1795 to 1797.

2 Rachel Cowgill "under 18" in 1766, date of Isaac's Will. Is this the Rachel in Chesterfield Twp, Burlington Co., who had a son b 6 Sep 1774 (out of wedlock)? No further information.

3 Sarah Cowgill (twin) b 8 Feb (edge of page torn from Bible) 1735. Lived but 20 days.

4 Lyddia Cowgill (twin) b 8 Feb 1735. Lived but 13 days.

5 Jacob Cowgill b 11 Nov 1737, d 17 Sep 1750, "on the second day of the week between three and four o'clock in the morning - He was taken away by death in his youth by a destemp that lay in his throat which soon carried him off. Being a lad of a harmless and quiet Disposition -- All-tho he is gone before his noon - our Savour thinks it not too soon." (Bible quote).

6 Isaac Cowgill Jr b 21 Oct 1742, Burlington Co., NJ, d 22 Oct 1809. Apparently never married. Isaac held a number of civic offices in Chesterfield Twp, Burlington Co. including Overseer of the Poor, Surveyor of Highways, Tax Assessor, and several appointments as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. He appears on Chesterfield Twp tax lists beginning in 1779 and up until 1809. In 1780 he was “disowned for holding offices of trust in the present unsettled state of public affairs and taken the oath of allegiance” (Chesterfield MM 3d 2m 1780). His Will, dated 22 Jun 1805, mentions Mary Cowgill, the dau of his brother George, and names his sister, Rachel Hall, and each of her children. Sister Rachel received a bed and curtains; niece Lydia Ranier a bed and $50; nephew (and Isaac’s executor) Abel Hall, Isaac’s plantation (“on which I now live”) and lots in Chesterfield Twp as well as the residue of his personal estate; $100 each to nephews Isaac and Parnall Hall, and niece Sarah Hall; $50 to niece Mary Cowgill, dau of brother George.

An obituary of Isaac appeared in Poulson's Daily American Advertiser of 1 Nov 1809: "DIED, on Sunday, the 22n inst., at his farm, near Bordentown, New Jersey, ISAAC COWGILL, Esq., in the 65th year of his age. For a great number of years he held the commissions of judge and justice for the county of Burlington, and was the presiding judge in the Court of Common Pleas. In these characters he discovered abilities rarely met with in our inferior courts. - As a man he possessed strict integrity, great firmness of mind, and an undeviating sincerity where he professed a friendship. As a politician, he was ever a decided friend to the liberties of his country, and upon all occasions avowed his sentiments openly. Few men will be more missed in this neighborhood; he was easy of access, frequently consulted by his neighbors, who highly esteemed his judgement; he gave it with cheerfulness, most frequently with correctness, and always with an honest intention."

7 Rachel Cowgill b 20 Oct 1745, d 25 Oct 1816, m 3 Sep 1764, John Hall; his Will was probated 1811. (See page 391, Cowgill History, for more on this family)
