Ewing first appears in Livingston Co., KY, in 1830, where he is listed on the census and on tax lists (1830 through 1835) as owner of 100 acres (Ohio River, then Deer Creek watercourse), 1 male over age 21 (himself), 0 children aged 5-15, 1 horse. Records (Bk C-2, p252) indicate the purchaser of this property was Henry Cowgill, but see nearby purchase by James, below. Ewing next appears on the 1840 census across the border in Johnson Co., IL. He is probably the "Elisha" Cowgill who on 10 Feb 1840 filed a land patent for 40 acres (description: SENE section 15, twp 15S, range 04E, meridian 3) in Massac Co. (formed from Johnson and Pope Counties). Ewing's presumed widow, Harriet, remarried 30 Jun 1842, Johnson Co. (Bk B, p180), John A. Pearce, b ca 1810, KY.

His children were in Pulaski Co., IL, in 1850, living with J. S. Smith, an M. D., and his wife Martha, age 35, b KY (James' widow).
