Arnold Cowgill b 1799, NJ, d 20 Jan 1851 (cause: phthisis pulmonalis), Philadelphia, age 51, m(1) Maria ____, d ca 1818; m(2) 20 Jul 1823, Philadelphia, by MG George Chandler, Presbyterian, Sophia Ritter (also as Riter and Rieter), b ca 1805, PA, d 13 Feb 1888, Philadelphia. Arnold served in the War of 1812 as an orderly sergeant in the PA militia, from 5 Sep 1814 to 5 Dec 1814 in Capt Robert Wilson's Co, 5th Bn, 2nd Bde, (Maj McFarland and Col Lefever). His widow Sophia received a $75 pension in Jul 1868 under Act of 24 May 1878 (PA?), cert # 317; her home at the time in Philadelphia. Arnold was listed as a resident of Chester Co. in 1814. He is listed on the 1830 census in Delaware Co., thereafter in Philadelphia. One of their daughters m a Lewis (mentioned as a son-in-law). Arnold bur in Old Kensington, Philadelphia. In 1885 Sophia is shown as a lodger with dau Anna's family in Nebraska; she is bur Mt Peace Cem.

Children: known are (assumed from census records and death notices) – son, Elizabeth, Henriette, Arnold, Ann, William, Sophia, Amanda, Charles

 

1 son Cowgill b 1815-1820 (not with family in 1840). Ellen Cowgill, of Blairsville, GA, has two possible sons of Arnold: Samuel (b May 1824, d 21 Feb 1827, bur Old Swedes Church, Philadelphia), and Arnold (b ca 1826, d same date/place).

 

2 Elizabeth Cowgill b 1818, d 24 Apr 1820, age 2, bur 1st Baptist Church, Philadelphia (“child of A. Cowgill”).

 

3 Henriette Cowgill b ca 1829, PA. No further information.

 

4 Arnold Cowgill b ca 1835, d 12 Sep 1837 (age 2 yrs; cause: marasmus), Philadelphia (listed as child of A. Cowgill). Bur 1st Baptist Burial Ground.

 

5 Anna Marie Cowgill b Nov 1832, PA, m William Koch, b Nov 1924, Prussia. William was a farmer in Dawson Co., NE, by 1885.

 

6 William H. Cowgill b Dec 1838, PA, d 1902, m(1) 14 (24?) Sep 1859, Edith S. Ellis, b Jun 1842, NJ, dau of Eleanor Ellis (living with them in 1870); div; m(2) as her 2nd husband, Louise E. (Houfron) Barth, b 4 Sep 1856, MA (of French parentage), d 17 Sep 1921. William had moved to Allegheny Co. from Philadelphia by 1886, when he appears in the Pittsburgh City Directory as a resident of Allegheny City. William served in the Civil War as a Sgt, Co B, 21st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, mustering in 15 Sep 1862 and mustered out 30 Sep 1862. He is bur Union Dale Cem., Pittsburgh. Edith remarried in 1887 to Stephen Morse.

1 Walter Howard Cowgill b 10 Sep 1860, PA, d 1 Sep 1933, m 1892, Philadelphia, Louise Bowker, b Jun 1867, MA, d 16 May 1947. Walter was a physician in Philadelphia. Both bur Fair Hill Burial Ground, Philadelphia.

Children: known are – dau, Herbert, unk, Walter H. Jr

2 Herbert S. Cowgill b 6 Apr 1896, PA, d 2 Apr 1904, Philadelphia.
