Thomas Cowgill b 21 May 1696, Middletown, Bucks Co., PA, d before 7 Dec 1749, Kent Co., DE, m (2nd int) 22 Jan 1728, Duck Creek Meeting, Sarah Clayton, b 1668, d 16 Aug 1750, dau of Joshua and Sarah (Needham) (Bedwell, widow of Henry) Clayton. Under DE Archives Vol A9 p136, Cowgle, Thomas, Admin of to Sarah Cowgle, widow, 7 Dec 1749. Arch Vol A-11, p119, Reg of Wills Liber K, Folio 4, shows Ezekiel Cowgill DBN of the goods adm'r or property not yet adm'd. Page 140 Cowgill, Sarah, widow. Will made 15 July 1750. Heirs: sons Ezekiel and Thomas; daus Sarah, Ellen, Rachel and Jane Smith. Executors: son Ezekiel and son-in-law Daniel Smith. Arch Vol A-11 p116. Prob. 16 Aug 1750 Reg of Wills, Liber K Folio 22.

Children: known are (order of birth uncertain) - Jane, Ezekiel, Sarah, Rachel, Ellen (Eleanor), Thomas.

 

1 Jane (Jean) Cowgill m 21 Jul 1747, Little Creek Hundred Meeting House, Kent Co., DE, Daniel (David) Smith, b 11 Jan 1722, Kent Co., MD, d 27 Feb 1769. Ralph Cowgill, uncle of Jane, signed marriage certificate. (See page 9, Cowgill History, for more on this family)

 

2 Ezekiel Cowgill b 30 Sep 1729, Kent Co., DE, d 8 Sep 1792, Kent Co., DE, m 20 Aug 1753, Mary (____) Sipple (widow of Christopher Sipple), d 22 Aug 1788. Both bur Friends Little Creek Cem. across from the Meeting House, Dover, DE. Ezekiel’s will was probated 28 Nov 1792 in Kent Co.

Children: known are - Daniel, Elizabeth

 

1 Daniel Cowgill b 13 May 1754, Kent Co., d there 24 Nov 1818 (cited in Poulson's Daily American Advertiser of 5 Dec 1818), m 13 Jun 1793, Sarah (Stout) Emerson, widow of Jacob Emerson and dau of Emmanuel and Mary (Griffith) Stout, b 6 Jan 1764 (1767?), d 30 Dec 1852 at age 86 years. Both bur Little Creek Cem. Daniel's will (filed for Probate 20 Nov 1818, Delaware Archives) is long and beautifully written. He bequeaths his mansions and large estates, and other possessions to his wife, sister-in-law, several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Daniel and Sarah had no children, nor did Sarah have children by her first marriage. Sarah became a Preacher in the Society of Friends. She died on the farm near Cowgills' Corner, Dover, DE. Under Quaker Necrology, Sarah Cowgill's name is listed in 1853; two publications, Friends Intelligencer and The Friends Review, had glowing eulogies of her life.

3 Sarah Cowgill, m 22 Nov 1756 (2nd intentions; Duck Creek MM records show marriage date of 17 Jan 1757; is this the Sarah on page 34?), Samuel Hand.

 

4 Rachel Cowgill, m before 1760, Jonathan Grewell, b 1733?, Kent Co DE, said to have moved to Plain City, OH; had son Thomas Grewell who m Ruth Manlove.

 

5 Ellen (Eleanor) Cowgill, m 31 Mar 1773 (declared intent 27 Feb 1773), Duck Creek MM, Timothy Jenkins who d 1778, son of Jabez and Tabitha Ozburn Jenkins. His will dated March 1778, Little Creek Hundred, appointed John and Henry Cowgill trustees.

 

6 Thomas Cowgill (Jr), d 1766-67, m 23 Feb 1765 (2nd intentions), Susanna Dawson, b 2 Sep 1746, Smyrna, DE, d 29 Nov 1834, in Radnor Twp, Delaware Co., PA, age 89 [she then being Susanna (Dawson) (Cowgill) Smedley], dau of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Fussell) Dawson. Susanna Cowgill remained a widow six years, then, at age 26 (24 Sep 1772), married John Smedley, age 56; he died at age 77, leaving her with eight children, one child having died earlier. (Under Delaware Probate Records, see p228: Cowgill, Thomas, Admin of to Benj. Dawson, 14 May 1767, Arch Vol A11, p120 RW Liber L, folio 26).

Child: known is -

 

1 Sarah Cowgill b 24 Feb 1766, m before 1781, as his 2nd wife, Richard Cox, b 29 Jan 1761, d ca 1815. Sarah was mentioned in the will of her grandfather, Benjamin Dawson, in 1781.
