Robert Cowgill, son of Margaret Cowgill, b 15 Jun 1847 (Jun 1845 on naturalization submission), Burnley, d 18 Jan 1916, m(1) 1870, Burnley, as her 2nd husband, Sarah Riley, b ca 1841, d 1879; m(2) 1881, MA, Margaret (Cowell?), d 15 Sep 1894, age 49y, in RI, dau of Axenabe and Mary G. Macdonald; m(3) 6 Nov 1894, Providence, RI (also as 19 Nov 1894 in Fall River), as her 2nd husband, Hannah (Crocker) Chesebro, b Oct 1848, (variously listed as RI/MA/CT), d 2 Jan 1924, dau of William A. and Susan Crocker. Robert emigrated to the US in 1880 (naturalized 22 Oct 1887, Fall River, MA); was an insurance agent in Ansonia, CT, in 1889/1890; in Woonsocket, RI, in 1891; in Fall River, MA, after 1900. Robert and Septimus arrived Quebec 21 Jun 1880 aboard the “Sarmatian”. Robert shown in 1851 as a grandson of Robert and Ellen; his marriage cert lists Margaret as his mother (father as John Smith). Robert's forbears may be found on the page of Bryan Cowgill, son of James.

James Cowgill, son of John and (unknown wife) Cowgill, b 1837 (Aug 1833 on 1900 US Census), d 16 Oct 1908, Bridgewater, MA, m(1) 1862, Jane Smith, b ca 1833, bur 21 Jul 1877, age 45, St Mary’s, Carleton in Craven, dau of George and Maria Smith of Carleton; m(2) 1 Jan 1880, Fitchburg, MA, (as her 2nd husband), Alicia (Henderson) Woods, b Aug 1845, England (Canada on 1880 census and mge cert). James was listed with his sister Mary’s family in 1851; in Burnley, Lancashire as a weaver in 1861; and was described as a weaver of Thornton on son William’s baptismal entry. In 1871 Jane was listed as a lodger with her mother, and her children were lodgers with other families. He is probably the James Cowgill who was a textile worker in Lowell, MA, in 1880 and a weaver in Pawtuckett, RI, in 1900 and claimed to have immigrated in 1865 (although not located on the US censuses of 1870 and 1880). He applied for US patents on loom machine improvements in 1887 and 1893. In 1900 James is listed as a "widower" in Pawtucket, Alicia as "married" with her children from her 1st marriage in Worcester, MA. Marriage cert lists James' parents as James and Mary.

John O. Cowgill b Oct 1846, Scotland (Ireland on 1900 census), d 18 Feb 1935, m 31 Oct 1899, Gonzales Co., TX, as her 2nd husband, Harriet E. Bartlett, b Aug 1845, England, d bef 1920. John claimed variously to have immigrated in 1845 and 1870. On the 1900 census, Harriet is shown as a merchant and John an ice factory laborer in Gonzales Co. The couple were in Los Angeles by 1910, and John is listed in an old folk's home in Fresno in 1930. Apparently no children.

John Arthur Cowgill, son of Jonathan and Martha (Catton) Cowgill, b 16 Jan 1887, Huddersfield, d 17 Sep 1966, m(1) 23 Dec 1911, St John the Evangelist's, Huddersfield, Mary Alice Moorhouse, b 1885, d 29 Jan 1941; m(2) Carrie _____. John and family arrived Newfoundland 26 Dec 1919 aboard the “Scandinavian”. He was a machinist and engineer in Montreal in the early 1920s; he is shown on the 1930 census in Macomb, MI, as an auto manufacturing machinist. He immigrated from Canada to Detroit in 1923, the rest of his family in 1924. Last address Lansing, MI. John's father is the "stray" Jonathan Cowgill.

1 John S. Cowgill (twin) b 29 Sep 1912, Huddersfield, d 23 Apr 1977. Last address Redding, Shasta Co., CA.

 

2 Sydney Cowgill (twin) b 29 Sep 1912, Huddersfield. Sydney was a child welfare worker in Cadillac, MI, in 1940.

 

3 Muriel Cowgill b ca 1917, England, no further information.

 

4 Reginald Cowgill b 21 Apr 1920, Montreal, Canada, d 29 Nov 1990, m Mable D. _____, b 11 Apr 1920, d 2 Dec 2011. Last address: Pharr, Hidalgo Co., TX.

John James Cowgill, son of James and Jane (Cook) Cowgill, b 1863, Birkenhead, d 10 Jun 1897, Victoria, BC, m Mary Ann Stewart (?), b 20 Jul 1866 Scotland (claimed Ireland on the 1891 census). John is not on the 1881/1891 UK censuses. Mary Ann, as Mary Ann Stewart, engineer’s wife, appears in Glasgow in 1891 with son James and a sister. John emigrated to Canada in 1892. John's forbears may be found on the page of Bryan Cowgill, son of James.

1 James Alexander Cowgill b 15 Mar 1884 (from WW I registration; death cert has 1885), Glasgow, d 7 Nov 1931, Vancouver, m(1) Elizabeth ____, b 25 May 1886, England, d 30 Jul 1911, age 26, Victoria, BC; m(2) 7 Mar 1919, Victoria, BC, Mary Sylvester Irvine, b ca 1884, d 6 Jan 1929, dau of James and Mary Irvine. Note: James is shown as "bachelor" at marriage to Mary who is listed as "spinster". But Clara’s birth entries have their parents as James and Mary, and Ethel’s death cert lists her father as James Savino.

James Cowgill b 1854, Trawden, m 1875, Margaret Eastwood, b ca 1845, dau of James and Nancy Eastwood. Margaret is listed as “married”, lodging with her parents in Great Marsden in 1881. Dau Sarah (if this is the right person) claimed on the 1900 census to have immigrated in 1881. No record found to date of James or Margaret in the US.

   Children: known are - Sarah, Herbert

Fred Cowgill (cousin to James, above) b 29 Aug 1875, Bradford, (bapt 26 Sep 1880, St Andrew’s, Kildwick), m 1895, Ida Kirkman, b ca 1875, Radcliffe. Fred was a fireman boiler in Bolton in 1901, a cotton mill engineer in Royton in 1911. He and family emigrated to Canada in 1924.
