Benjamin Cowgill, 2nd child of John and Sarah (Rangdale) Cowgill, b 20 Mar 1840, Bradford, d 17 Jan 1896, age 56, MA, m(1) 14 Jun 1863, Bradford, Sarah Jagger, b 27 Aug 1839, England, d 2 Nov 1902, St Louis, MO (bur in Bridgeport); separated/divorced (need verification)?; m(2) 19 Apr 1884, Fall River, MA (also as 6 Jan 1896, Fall River - a remarriage?), the widow Mary (Foley) Marshall, b 27 Nov 1841, England, d 7 May 1913, Fall River, MA. Benjamin and family emigrated to the US in 1882, Benjamin (and the family?) arriving New York 20 Feb 1882 aboard the “City of Montreal” (He naturalized 12 Sep 1888, Fall River). Benjamin apparently made return trips to England up through 1894. Sarah is listed in the 1886 Waltham, MA, directory with son William; later lived in Bridgeport, CT. Mary’s death cert lists her father as James Hardy; Benjamin's lists his mother as Sarah Hartley. Benjamin's earlier line is on the page of Bryan, son of James Cowgill.

William said to have lived in St Louis, but not on census; shown in Providence, RI, in 1900, later in Camden Co., NJ. Naturalized 28 Jun 1902, Providence. Both bur Arlington Cem., Pennsauken, NJ.

3 Joseph William Cowgill b 24 Apr 1908, NJ, d 19 Nov 1986, m Margaret Elizabeth Bittner, b 20 Oct 1912, d 21 Mar 1991. Joseph was a member of the Delaware River Port Authority at the time of his death; a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn's Law School; admitted to the bar in 1934. He was elected to the General Assembly in 1941 and a year later became county surrogate. He left the post during World War II, serving as a Navy lieutenant from 1943 to 1946. He was elected to the NJ Senate in 1955 and re-elected in 1959; was Senate minority leader in 1957 and from 1959 through 1962. He also served as a Camden County freeholder for three years, as county counsel for nine years and as an assistant county prosecutor. Active in party affairs, he was an alternate at-large delegate to the 1956 Democratic National Convention, a delegate at-large at the 1960 convention and alternate at-large at the 1964 convention. He led his party as county chairman from 1955 to 1965. He produced strong margins for Democratic candidates such as John F. Kennedy, and was a welcome guest at the White House. Sen. Cowgill was a member of the American, New Jersey and Camden County Bar Associations, the American Judicature Society and the Selden Society. He was a trustee of the United Fund and a former member of the board of directors of United Jersey Banks. He lived in Merchantville, Camden Co., NJ. (from an obit in the Philadelphia Enquirer). No children.

Jowett Cowgill, son of Brian and Anne (Jowett) Cowgill, b 14 Feb 1832 (bapt 22 Apr 1832, St Matthew’s), Wilsden, d 1894, Pateley Bridge, m(1) 21 Jun 1852, Bradford, Hannah Robertshaw, b ca 1834, bur 5 Aug 1871, age 31; m(2) 14 Oct 1871, Bradford, as her 2nd husband, Mary Collins (nee Windle), b Apr 1841, England, d 3 Apr 1913, Lawrence, MA. Jowett was a stone mason or quarryman, in Huddersfield in 1881, in Bradford by 1891. Jowett arrived New York 10 Mar 1894; Mary and dau Mary A. emigrated in 1895 (Boston), and a Harry Cowgill, age 1, was also with her. Mary shown as a widow and mother of three children (all living in 1910) residing with dau Mary and family on the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Lawrence and North Andover, MA. Mary claimed three children, three alive in 1900. Two are known to be from her 1st marriage. Jowett's earlier line is on the page of Bryan, son of James Cowgill.

Thomas is listed as a stone mason in Manningham (Bradford) in 1881. His sister, Annie (Hannah?) Cowgill, was living with him. He emigrated 4 Jun 1881 to Queens, NY, where he was a stonecutter. Granted naturalized citizenship 28 Oct 1892.

1 Frank Joseph Cowgill b 8 Nov 1921, NY, d 27 Nov 2000, m Betty Jane _____ , b Jan 1925, d 15 Jun 1979. Frank was a veteran was of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps (later as Maj, USAF), from 1944 to 1967. During his military career he completed 35 combat missions over Germany and was awarded the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters and the European and Middle East Theater of War Ribbon with 3 Battle Stars. He moved to DE after Hurricane Andrew destroyed his home in FL. Bur Arlington National Cem. (Sec 6-N3 Row 3 Site 4).

Benjamin Rangdale Cowgill b 1855, Queensbury (Bradford), d 26 Sep 1914 (his death registered in York district), m 18 Feb 1880, Richmond Terrace Chapel, Bradford, Emma Jane Whitley, b ca 1862, Bradford, d 1947, dau of John Barber and Martha Whitley. Benjamin was a druggist apprentice in Bingley in 1871; a chemist and druggist in Girlington (Bradford) by 1881. Benjamin emigrated to the US in 1885, arriving New York on the "Germanic" as a visitor, married, with Harry and Mary Ellis, in 1901. He became a naturalized US citizen in New York on 3 Oct 1891. He is not located on the 1900/1910 US censuses. Emma is listed alone (but as married) as a dressmaker in Lytham, Lancs, in 1891, and in Utley as a house servant in 1911.

Hill Cowgill, son of John and Mary (Hill) Cowgill, b ca 1803, Wilsden (Bradford), d 1881, m 28 May 1832, Bingley, Elizabeth Mercer, b ca 1810, Halifax, d 1877. Hill, age 51, mechanic by profession, arrived in New York on 15 Sep 1857 aboard the "Middlesex "; he is shown on the 1860 census in Canton, MO, visiting his dau Mary and family. He is listed as a Private, Co B, 2nd Northeast Regiment, Missouri Home Guard, during the American Civil War. He was back in Wilsden by 1871, where he was a machine wool comber.

Children: known are – Asenath, Mary (emigrated), Martha, Betty, James, Ann, Rose Hannah

 

2 Mary Cowgill b 17 Aug 1836 (bapt 28 Sep 1845, St Matthew's), Wilsden (Bradford), d 20 Feb 1912, Lewistown, MO, m 29 Jan 1856, Bradford Old Church, Yorkshire, William C. Turner, b 7 Nov 1810, Yorkshire, d 24 Jul 1894, Lewistown, MO. William and Mary emigrated to the US in the 1850s. Her father visited her there in 1860.

 

4 James Cowgill b 21 May 1842 (bapt 28 Sep 1845, St Matthews), Morton (Bingley), d 1885, m 19 Dec 1868, Bradford, Mary Downs, b ca 1848, Thornton (Bradford), d 1932. James was a cotton warp dresser in a worsted factory in Bingley. Mary moved to North Bierley (Bradford) after James' death. James did not emigrate, but two of his sons did.

4 John Hill Cowgill b 10 Jul 1876, Bingley (Otley), d 9 Apr 1949, m 1901, North Bierley (Bradford), Mary Ellen Knight, b ca 1873, d 21 Apr 1951. John was a stone mason in Bradford in 1901. He emigrated to the US in 1905, where he worked in textiles in North Providence, RI. John and family visited Australia in 1920, arriving Sydney 4 Oct 1920 aboard the Ormonde. They were back in Providence by 1930.

5 Joseph Arthur Cowgill b 1879, Bingley, d 1959, Jord, Victoria, m 1906, Bradford, Florence Illingworth, b ca 1882. Joseph emigrated to the US in 1906, arriving New York 21 Apr 1906 aboard the Caronia; he also is listed as arriving 25 Sep 1910 in Boston aboard the Parisian. He was a weaver in Providence, RI, in 1910; he apparently returned to England and later emigrated to Australia, arriving Sydney 31 Jan 1921 aboard the Ormonde. Joseph was a laborer in NSW in 1936.
