George Cowgill Family Tree

What's on this page:

Notes:

Page 374 (in Cowgill History - Note: this George and his descendents were previously listed on page 374 as the son of George, son of Isaac. The discovery of the will of Mary Cowgill proves that a different George (now shown on page 374) is the rightful one for that line. It is possible (but needs to be proven) that George is the "Child by a young woman that was not his wife" of the John Cowgill who d 9 Nov 1799. The unnamed child mentioned in Quaker records is not identified by sex. John was a Revolutionary War veteran, which would explain the land warrant; and although Henry Clinton Cowgill's story has some defects, it does link this George to the family of John.

George Morris Cowgill b 1756 (or Dec 1755?), Burlington Co., NJ, d 1830s, m(1) Burlington Co., 24 Jan 1776, by license, (under NJ marriages, NJ Archives; also on Bucks Co. Historical Notes, undated, unsigned), Elizabeth Sowden (also shown as Snowden), who d after 18 Sep 1790; m(2) Ann (Brown) Slack, a widow with several children. George apparently left NJ for OH after Elizabeth died, as his first child by Ann was b 1795 in OH. He is probably the George Cowgill on a Chester Co., PA, tax list for 1790, and on a Northumberland Co., PA, census that same year. He is noted as one of the first settlers in Franklinton (later Columbus), arriving there spring 1798 (The Old Northwest Geneological Quarterly, Vol. 15), later moving to newly formed Delaware Co. A Delaware Co. history states George Morris Cowgill was the first settler in Berlin Twp, Delaware Co., OH, arriving “about a mile above where Hall’s mill stood” in Nov 1805. He also sat on the first jury hearing a trial by the county court (1808).

George supposedly left one thousand dollars to each of his children (see page 423, Cowgill History); there was also supposedly a Revolutionary War land warrant left to his heirs located at Bellepoint, Delaware Co., OH. In a note to Daysie DeSpain in 1941, ggson Frank B. Cowgill said “I think he (George) was raised in a Quaker family, (not his own family), in southeastern Pennsylvania. … had a brother, Jacob Cowgill, who lived in Virginia.” A bio of Charles C. Cowgill (page 377) cited in 20th Century History of Delaware County, Ohio, and Representative Citizens, by J.R. Lytle, 1908, claims George “was of English birth, and came to the United States with his two brothers”. In Henry Clinton Cowgill’s Journal, he relates that his grandfather’s (this George’s) father was also named George; he also retells a story of a visit by George to VA to see his brother Jacob who lived there. He also states that when George and Anna moved to OH, they left the elder children (his and hers) behind, but nearly all but uncles Thomas and Joseph rejoined them in 1805.

Thomas, apparently this one, is listed on Burlington Co., NJ, tax records until 1807 (later lists are missing or unreliable); he first appears in Ohio on a 1826 tax list for Delaware Co. Note: Thomas Cowgill (Cowgal) appears on the 1840 census, Brown Twp with 1 male 60/70; 1 female 5/10; 1 female 60/70. On 17 Sep 1850 census, Thomas appears with young wife, Polly, and two children, plus a George Temple, age 17, brother of Polly, and Thomas Marsh, 10, son by Polly's first marriage.
