Evan F.? Cowgill, son of Martha Cowgill and Samuel Allen, b 1810, Frederick Co., VA, d May 1855, m 10 Nov 1831, Belmont Co., OH, by Eleazor Evans, JP, Sarah McKinley, b 1812, d Jun 1854, dau of William and Tamer (Brown) McKinley. (Belmont Co. Marriages, Book 3, p93, has "Cogill"/"Cogell".) (Years of birth and death on tombstones in Harmony Cem., Valley Twp, Harmony, Guernsey Co., OH.) Evan and Sarah moved the following spring (1832) to Guernsey Co. and settled on a farm on the Clay Pike (State Route 313), about 8 miles south of Cambridge, OH, where Evan lived and practiced medicine the rest of his life. Dr. Cowgill was a conscientious and successful physician and enjoyed the confidence and respect of the entire community. He was a charter member and elder of the Harmony Christian Church from its organization in 1838. An epidemic of Typhoid Fever in the spring of 1854 afflicted almost his entire family, two daughters dying in one week. Sarah died in Jun 1854. Dr Evan never recovered from an injury received the previous Fall sufficiently to resume his practice outside his office, and he died May 1855.

The following is an excerpt of a letter from Joseph Ewing Cowgill to James Cowgill of Guernsey County, OH, dated October 5, 1908:

"I have been trying to trace those Cumberland Cowgills that G. W. McKinley told you about and I have run against a rather puzzling condition of affairs and feel inclined to doubt the accuracy of the information received. At any rate I will submit the whole matter to you and wish your advice.

"My information is that a Dr. Evan F. Cowgill married a Miss Sarah McKinley. Their children were William, Martha, Jane, Mary E., Miranda, Asbury, James R. and Israel. William married a Miss Anna Starr, and their children were: John, Elizabeth, Matilda A., James, Joseph A., Mary M., Frances S. and Sarah E.

"I naturally inquired at once who Dr. Evan F.'s father was, expecting to find that it was the Joseph Cowgill I inquired of you about - or the Joseph mentioned in your great grandfather's will (brother of James.)

"You may judge of my surprise at the sequel! Mrs. Anna (Starr) Cowgill (wife of William) is still living. Her home is at Cumberland but having recently met with an accident (a broken hip) is staying at present with her married daughter, Mrs. Mary Cowgill Wycoff, at Cambridge, O. - address R.F.D. #2.

"A letter from Mrs. Wycoff, written at the request and dictation of Anna (Starr) Cowgill contains the following:

'Dr. Evan Cowgill's mother was a Miss Martha Cowgill and she had three sons James, Ralph and Evan, all born out of wedlock, and of course, they took their mother's name. (She afterward married a Mr. Brown.) We do not know the order of their birth nor who their fathers were except that Evan's father was a Mr. Thomas Allen. (All this in Va. JEC). Dr. Evan came to Ohio and raised his family here and we never knew any of his people, -- etc.'

"What do you think of this?....."

Signed

"Joseph Ewing Cowgill"

Note: If Martha was a Cowgill, and if Evan was b in Frederick Co., then she must be either another dau of George (more likely, see page 352) or a dau of Eleazer (not likely, see page 291). All other Cowgills in the Frederick and neighboring counties appear to be accounted for. If George’s, she was not with him in 1810 (the dau on the census would be Nancy).

Added Note: Although Joseph’s letter cited above says Thomas Allen was the father, both Beatrice Cowgill and Mark Accas list Samuel Allen as the father (from letters of other descendents). There were no Samuel Allens on the census in Frederick or Hampshire Co., VA, in 1810; there were two Thomas Allens in Hampshire Co. in 1810, both aged 26/45. A Thomas Allen, age >45, is on the 1820 census of Hampshire Co. next to a Samuel Allen, age 26/45 (an Elijah Redman lived nearby). A Martha Brown, head of household, is also on the 1820 census (listed near several Aldertons) in Hampshire Co. with m 5<10;1 26/45;f 2<10;1 26/45. On the 1830 census of Belmont Co., OH, p265 lists William McKinley (Evan’s father-in-law) next to a Samuel Allen who had m 1<5;2 5/10;2 10/15;1 20/30;1 30/40; another Samuel Allen on p271 had m 1<5;1 5/10;1 30/40. On the 1840 census of Guernsey Co., there is a Samuel Allen on the same page as Evan in the 40/50 age group.
